Scope

This document specifies the product grades and marking, technical requirements and test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transportation and storage of non-petroleum-based brake fluids used in hydraulic brake and hydraulic clutch systems of motor vehicles. This document is applicable to motor vehicle brake fluids that are in contact with seals made mainly of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) or ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM), and that are made from a base fluid of non-petroleum-based raw materials (alcohols, glycol ethers and their synthetic compounds) with the addition of various additives.
