How to Find Chinese Standards in English: Official Sources and Translation Options

Check official English editions first, distinguish English metadata from translated full text, and assess third-party translations before buying.

Some Chinese standards have official English editions. Others are available only in Chinese or through third-party translations. Check official foreign-language records before buying, and do not confuse an English catalogue title with a complete English document.

The best option depends on the exact standard and edition, your intended use, and the document your customer or laboratory will accept. Availability must be checked for each identifier, not assumed across an entire standards series.

An English title is not an English full text

A catalogue may display an English title, scope summary or translated product description while the supplied file remains Chinese. Look for explicit language information, an identifiable edition and an authorized access route. A cover image with English words is also insufficient evidence of a full translation.

Before ordering, ask a simple question: Will the delivered document contain the complete text in English, and who produced that edition? Request a lawful sample or contents page if the answer is unclear. Confirm coverage of tables, figures, annexes and amendments, rather than assuming a translated summary is the whole standard.

Start with official foreign-language publications

Article 7 of the National Standards Management Measures encourages foreign-language editions. Search the official standards information platform and the foreign-language section of the national full-text system using the complete number and year.

One verified example is the official foreign-language record for GB 38031-2025, concerning electric-vehicle traction battery safety requirements. When checked on 14 October 2026, the record identified the language as EN and displayed Online Preview and Download Standard controls.

This check confirms the record and its advertised access options, not a completed download or a page-by-page review of the PDF. Open the official record and test the current access route before purchasing an alternative. Interface availability and access conditions can change.

For industry standards, consult the issuing ministry or department as well. The Industry Standards Management Measures provide for recording foreign-language editions. A failed national-portal search is not conclusive evidence that no industry English edition exists.

Compare the document options honestly

OptionWhat to verifyImportant limit
Official foreign-language editionOfficial publication record, exact code, year and language.Do not assume it is available for every Chinese standard.
Third-party translationTranslator or publisher, source edition, full coverage and quality checks. It is not an official edition simply because it is professionally formatted.
Chinese originalCorrect text and edition, lawful access and project acceptance. An English-speaking team may need qualified technical language support.

For a third-party translation, ask whether it was translated from the specific Chinese edition you need. Check consistency of technical terminology, units, formulas and cross-references. A sample cannot prove the entire translation is correct, but it can expose missing sections or an obvious mismatch.

For acceptance testing or a disputed interpretation, agree with the responsible customer, laboratory or authority which text will be used and how differences will be resolved. Do not claim that a translation automatically replaces the relevant source text or guarantees regulatory acceptance.

Metadata availability and text access are different

The official GB/T 19001-2016 record provides information but states that text reading is not provided because of international copyright considerations. That restriction is not proof that the standard is withdrawn or that no English document exists elsewhere.

Respect the terms for each text and edition. Article 10 of the National Standards Management Measures addresses copyright in national standards and their foreign-language editions. An available preview or download does not itself grant permission to redistribute copies or publish the full text on another website.

Confirm six details before payment

  1. Identifier: prefix, serial number, part and year all match your request.

  2. Language: English full text, bilingual full text or Chinese only is stated explicitly.

  3. Origin: official foreign-language edition or third-party translation is clearly labelled.

  4. Coverage: figures, tables, annexes and any included amendments are specified.

  5. Use rights: check permitted users, internal sharing and redistribution conditions.

  6. Delivery: confirm the file format, actual availability and expected fulfilment time.

Do not infer bilingual availability from a listing that only shows a Chinese file. If English is unavailable, send the full code, intended use and required date to the provider for an availability check. An inquiry is a request to verify options, not a promise that a translation already exists or can be delivered by your deadline.

Choose the next step for your project

If the official English access route meets your needs, use it first. If it does not, compare clearly identified alternatives and obtain the technical owner's approval. Our catalogue can help locate a standard; confirm the language shown on its detail page and use its inquiry option when you need an English-availability check.

Continue your document check

Before checking language availability, follow the standard-search workflow and confirm the complete code, part and edition. These checks help keep a quotation tied to the intended document.
